The “ATTEMPTED SWITCH FROM DPC” BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error may appear when the computer abruptly shuts down during the initialization process for older versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista, XP, 2000, 7 and 8. This error is caused by a delayed procedure call (DPC) routine that attempted to perform an illegal operation. The DPC is triggered when the kernel detects a hung condition and makes a call to terminate or interrupt a software. It means that a yield, attach process, or a wait operation was executed from a DPC routine.
In many situations, this BSOD error may be caused by a device driver, hardware, or a related software, and the abrupt shutdown of the computer is automatically executed to prevent data loss. The recent addition of a hardware or the updating of a device driver, such as video drivers, are the usual causes of this error. Other possible causes of this BSOD error are faulty memory and antivirus/ antispyware software.

To fix the “ATTEMPTED SWITCH FROM DPC” BSOD error, you have to check the computer for recently installed hardware, device driver, or other related software. Replace corrupted or outdated device drivers by downloading and installing device drivers and updates respectively, from Windows Update. To perform manual updates, open the Internet Explorer, click on Safety, then choose Windows Update and follow the prompts and instructions.
You can also employ System Restore to resolve this BSOD error. To do this, click on the Start button, type System Restore on the dialog box, and press Enter. Click on system Restore when it appears on the search results and follow the instructions to install the Recommended Restore point. If you wish to restore the system to a definite date and time, select the option to choose a different restore point from the restore utility window, click Next, and follow the provided instructions.
