How to Protect Your Privacy Online

Chances are you have heard about identity theft, online spying, exploited personal information, stolen credit card details in the recent past.  You may be wondering who’s watching what you do, where you go online, and what websites you visit?

Now that almost everyone uses the internet across all age groups, the privacy of each and every one of us is at risk. Advertisers, service providers, and governments all around the world are seemingly more interested in tracking all our online activity.

Not to worry. Here are some quick tips to help you protect your privacy online.

#1 Saved Username and Passwords

Some or most of us want to skip inputting manually our login credentials(user-password) each and every time we go to our email provider, social media sites or other websites using our browsers. Thus, we tend to save our user and password on our browsers to automatically log on.

However, convenient as it may be, that user-password is also at risk. It can be stolen or copied by anyone who can get an access to your browsers.

To prevent anyone from catching your usernames and passwords, do not save your log-ins. However, if you have saved a list of them already, you can follow the guide below on how to remove them.

Google Chrome

  1. Launch Google Chrome and go to Settings
  2. A new tab will open showing you the settings. Go to “Advanced”
  3. Click on Manage passwords
  4. You will be shown a list of saved user-passwords
  5. Delete user-password combinations by clicking the options menu

Now, your Chrome browser is clean of user-password combinations. Close Chrome.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Go to Mozilla Firefox settings by typing on its address bar: about:preferences and hit Enter
  2. Click on Privacy and Security and go to Saved Logins
  3. Delete all of your saved user-password combinations
  4. Close and exit Mozilla Firefox

Microsoft Edge

  1. Launch Edgefrom your Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
  2. Click the More button in the top-right corner of the window. It looks like •••
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click the More button. Click Settings
  5. Click View advanced settings. You might have to scroll down a bit to find it
  6. Click Manage my saved passwords. You might have to scroll down a bit to find it
  7. Click View advanced settings. Click Manage my saved passwords
  8. Hover your cursor over a password you want to delete
  9. Click the X to remove the password

Now, you can be rest assured that your user-password logins are no longer at risk.

#2 Deleting HTTP or Browser Cookies

A cookie is a packet of data which holds information that your computer receives and sends back without altering or changing it. These cookies are saved on your browser when you visit a website.

Cookies are used in different ways, but, the common use of it is to track user’s visits and activities.

How can you prevent yourself from being tracked? Protect your privacy by deleting cookies after using your browsers.

Google Chrome

  1. Go to Settingsby typing in the address bar: chrome://settings/ and hit Enter
  2. Go to Advancedand click on “Clear browsing data”
  3. In the window that opens, make sure all options are selected and click on Clear Data
  4. Cookies are cleared. Exit Chrome.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Launch Firefox and then type this on address bar: about:preferences#privacy and hit Enter
