AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) developed by AOL Inc. is an instant messaging client that uses the OSCAR (Open System for CommunicAtion in Realtime) instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol that allows communication between registered users in real time. Instant messaging (IM) uses the Internet to provide a service that offers quick transmission of text-based messages from sender to receiver. Hence, it falls under the umbrella classification online chat because it is bi-directionally exchanged, text-based, and happens in real time. Instant messages sent over a network can be a point-to-point communication or multicast communications from one sender to many receivers. AIM provides users a quick way to get connected and stay connected with their family, friends and business colleagues. The new Lifestream feature in AIM allows the addition of accounts like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter where users can follow posts and status messages to stay connected in real time. AIM is available on Windows, Mac, and mobile phones like iPhone and Windows mobile. AIM runs in platforms supported by Windows, Windows Mobile, Android, Mac OS X, Blackberry OS, and iOS.

AOL

AOL is an Internet access software America Online (also known as AOL), an American company that invests and develops brands and web sites. Like other similar software, AOL allows the user to activate dial-up connections to the Internet by means of an ISP (Internet service provider) or a VPN (Virtual private network). A range of technologies is employed by every ISP to enable users to connect to their network. The different connection types are the dial-up, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), fiber to the premises (FTTH), broadband wireless, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and cable modem. Data, files, and images are transmitted by packet switching according to the Internet Protocol (IP), from the service provider to users that include domestic, academic, business, and government networks. The transmitted packets can contain a wide range of information and services like electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, documents from the World Wide Web, and interlinked Web pages.

Connected ePreserver

Connected ePreserver is a communications and e-mail software used for converting AOL e-mail, folders, address book and favorite places. This software automatically finds AOL PFC, or Personal Filing Cabinet files and the new email application. It provides support for various screen names and converts all address book fields which also includes the distribution lists. It Converts HTML email, text email, attachments, headers and also supports converting into Mac Mail. It maintains a filing cabinet folder structure and it also copies information even if a user is no longer a member of AOL. ePreserver does not support Mac platforms and does not convert data files from AOL into Mac. But users can convert Windows AOL data into Mac by running ePreserver under Windows and copying the information to Mac. In summary, ePreserver can copy AOL mail and contacts to Microsoft Outlook or Gmail, convert AOL favorites to Internet Explorer and export AOL data from Windows to Mac. Favorites are converted to Internet Explorer, but users can also convert favorites to Firefox or Opera by converting it first in Internet Explorer, then command Firefox or Opera to import favorites from Internet Explorer.
